This is a fairly new camera, I wonder if anyone here has experience with it? I am wondering if it will make a good camera and video camera for my 8 year old.

Thanks for any real-world feedback!

That model is the ZS15 here in the states. It is a terrific camera. Lots of folks here have posted some fantastic shots using it.

As for an 8-year old, put the camera on iA and let him shoot away to his heart's content. The camera will do all the hard work. It has a great zoom and it will fit nicely in small hands. It does have lots of additional features if the 8-year old really wants to learn more about photography.

I think it is a fine choice for a starter camera. Let me add, I have the ZS19 which is basically the same camera with slightly more zoom. I love it. I have not tried the video, as I rarely if ever use that mode, but there have been a number of posts on this forum with video clips from folks that have used it.

Post a few results and let us see how your 8-year old does with it.

Actually, the ZS15 is the same as the TZ25. The TS25 is a totally different Panasonic camera. Apparently it's one of those waterproof, shock proof numbers. Other than that I can't say anything about it. Hopefully someone else here can.

Indeed I did mean the waterproof/shockproof model. I thought that would be a good idea for my daughter, because she loves water and also she does drop things sometimes (as the tiny crack on my iphone screen shows--that happened when my daughter was shooting pictures with my phone!). This Panasonic model is attractive to me because it's in a good price zone -- most of the "good" waterproof cameras are around $300. But now I'm starting to think a regular camera plus a better warranty might be a better idea. Seems like you trade image quality for a waterproof housing, and also every brand has reviewers complaining that their camera stopped working after being in the water.

So, I will take a look at the ZS15 and other models like that. I like that it has a bit of a grip on it (she tried out my new LX7, and she liked the grip!). I would really love to find something like that, but under $200!

Thanks,

eP

I just bought my ZS19 through Amazon, refurbished, for $120 (+$10 shipping).

The factory refurbished warranty is only for 90 days. Amazon has an excellent return policy, which, fortunately, does not look like I will be needing.

I thought that to be an excellent price. I am having a ball with it.
