When I had a DX camera, I liked the 50mm f/1.4G a lot for portraits.

Now that I have an FX camera, I mostly use the 105 f/2.5 AIS.

The 70-200 VRII is very good for portraits between 85mm and 135mm, but it's also very heavy and can be intimidating for subjects who aren't used to being shot by big lenses. The 105 is relatively minuscule and a lot easier to handle, imo.
