A classic ultracompact
1

This camera became outdated years ago, but I recently got one for free and it surprised me very positively. Focus is slow by the standards of 2010s, but image quality is still quite good for a 4 MP camera. It beats all the 5 MP smartphone cameras I have tried at base ISO, and I have used quite a few. ISO 400 is usable for web or smallish prints. The size is compact even by modern standards as well. A good choice for a child's first "real" (i.e. non-phone) camera, if you can get it free or at nominal price.
