Depends on your expectations for "casual video"

but the video is often referred to as sub-par (this worries me).

"sub-par" probably means compared to other DSLRs...less control than others, less frame rate choices, etc.

DSLR video generally isn't as good as videocams for a few casual video for a few reasons:

- DOF is narrow (great for cinematic video, not casual video)

- audio is crappy (you hear the SR mechanism...and the autofocus motor...crappy built-in mics)

- sometimes not enough bandwidth (depending on the videocam you get, if you get a comparably priced one, it'll do video better...i.e., sharper, better colors, etc.)

- AF doesn't work as well as videocams (related to DOF...videocams can be sloppier)

It's sort of like asking if you can take casual snapshots w/ a DSLR.  Most people have DSLRs because you have more control over DOF, better lenses, RAW files for better processing, etc.

This topic comes up fairly often...probably at least once a year...
