I recommend the 18-105 VR Lens its excellent value.

and this lens works nice in low light as well?

This is a standard Zoom Lens and as such it has its tradeoffs as all zoom lenses do.  If you want a really good low light lens you might have to invest in a 35mm 1.8 prime lens this will give you very good results in low light. Alternatively in a 50mm 1.8. You might also go for a 2.8 Zoom lens, like the Tamon 70-200, that will set you back a chunk of money though, if you get the same one from Nikon it will set you back even more.

But as far as bang for the buck goes the 18-105 VR will give you a lot of bang. The 16MP Sensor in the D5100 is really good in low light, so that is also something which helps, and it can save you some money that otherwise would have to go into a much more expensive "low light" lens.
