35 mm prime vs kit 18-55 zoom as sole vacation lens?

Although I have a D700 and D800e with many Nikon lenses and

Although I go to Europe once, sometimes twice a year...the Nikons have never been there.

I take only an APS-C size sensor Sony NEX 7 with 19 and 30mm primes. Very capable   photographically and stealthy, too,  in pickpocket havens such as Rome, Paris, Naples, Barcelona....

Your small D5000 with midrange zoom and the 35 1.8 should prove equally capable.

While the zoom is flexible, the 35mm is so fast, good, small and light it really makes sense to bring both.

Two weeks from now we'll be in Marseille feeling comfortably low key with the NEX 7. Your D5000 should prove much the same.

btw, in film days I used to bring just a Konica S3 with fixed 38mm lens...it did its part well as long as I did mine.
