Eyes being level in a portrait is absolutely not necessary, don't know where you came up with that. Being a boy, the head should be tilted toward the lowest shoulder and one shoulder should be a little lower that the other. With head slightly tilted eyes would not be level and this is proper. This simply follows the very basic rules of portraiture for a male subject. Like I said before, portraits of our children have no rules, we shoot and they're always acceptable to us, right?
