A lot of people seem to agree that the Zoom or something like it (a dedicated audio recorder) is the best way to go, no matter which NEX you have. For sound quality alone, I would imagine that is the way to go.

For a built-in option that mounts in the new NEX-6 Multi Interface Shoe, there is now a shipping option that works fairly well (at least in my experience over the last three days):

It's the ECM-XYST1M microphone, found here on Sony's website:

So, there is now a shipping, mountable mic that improves sound recording quality and that doesn't require mixing/syncing audio and video files in post. Whether the sound quality is good enough (relative to a Zoom or other dedicated option like a Tascam) is a question that each individual has to answer for themselves.

Incidentally this mic appears to work with Multi Interface Shoe (MIS) devices directly through the port (including A99, HandyCam camcorders, and the NEX-6, even though the NEX-6 isn't listed on the website as supported, I have confirmed that it does work on my own camera), and through using the mic out port on the ECM-XYST1M, with the included stereo audio cable, you can connect it to any camera that has such a port, including the NEX-7, all you need is to either mount it using an iISO to MIS adapter like the ADP-AMA, or just mount it on a cold shoe somewhere close enough (like a bracket) that the cable can reach your mic in port:
