I have both.  The cheaper lens (70-300) is the luxury:  I use it when I want a more casual, easy-to-carry telephoto set-up.  The 70-400 is my go-to lens in almost all situations, and certainly the lens I use when IQ is crucial.  The 70-400 is the last lens I would give up.

That said, Michael Reichmann at Luminous Landscape has posted some excellent pictures recorded with the 70-300, and speaks of it highly (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony-a900.shtml).  The difference between the 70-300 and the 70-400 is not as important as what's behind the camera.
