Re: Monopod: What are its benefits?

I do mostly landscape photography, including lots of hiking to get to locations.  A tripod is my preferred camera support (particularly in not-so-ideal lighting conditions), but my monopod serves as a walking stick and will fit on a single-track trail a lot easier than a tripod.  It's also quicker to set up for those come-around-the-bend-and-see-wildlife shots.

In your situation, I would consider a monopod a good compromise between better support in not-so-ideal lighting and avoiding 3 feet of spread-out tripod legs blocking an area poolside where pool staff, parents, and other swimmers might want to be.
