Why is the flash better on the X100/X100s than the X-E1/Pro1?

Compare to the flash images i get with the X100 vs X-E1, the X100 flash shots look so natural (you can't tell a flash was used). It's like the flash just blend in naturally. The flash on the X-E1 is the opposite; I could tell that a flash was used on the shots and you could see some hot spot on people faces.

If the flash is simply being used in support of other lighting, the X100 is better because its flash is closer to the line of the lens.

That is a terrible place to put a flash if you are relying on the flash to entirely light the scene, but ideal for fill flash.
