Sigma SD9 review

Less than average image quality and ease of use, good construction and features. This camera is solid as a rock and the hardware and menu are very easy to use. The image resolution is outstanding. When I bought my SD9, the value for money was better than average, but the "average" changes as new $1000 DSLRs are introduced.

Problems:

Less-than-average image quality and ease of use. The X3F files and Sigma software are a hassle, and the camera's auto white balance and color fidelity are very bad. Note well that the files produced by this camera are propriety RAW files, called X3F, that can be opened and manipulated only in Sigma software. The Sigma software doesn't have crop or print functions or color sliders. Furthermore, it is not easy (I would say impossible) to correct white balance or color issues in the Sigma software.

Update March 2004: my SD9 was my first dslr, and at the time I bought it, was the only dslr around US$1000. Since then, I sold my SD9 on Ebay and bought a Nikon D70 for less than what I originally paid for my SD9. The Foveon chip in the SD9 gives very "deep" resolution, but otherwise IMHO every single feature of the D70 is superior to the SD9. You can do a lot better than Sigma for less money.
