Konica Minolta DiMAGE Xg review

Pure point and shoot camera in a very portable format. Considering rather low price this is a good buy in terms of value for the money. Great finish (all metal body) and nice design after all previous models. Minolta released later further stripped down version notably Dimage X31 (in plastic), but XG still is a better choice in my humble opinion (lithium battery and charger included in the package, more sophisticated AF system and additional build-in functions). Generally XG picture quality is more than satisfactory if not very good, but as light levels drop camera will develop a few strange quirks. One is a pinkish cast visible in some pictures and it's inability to focus in dim light (no build-in focus assist lamp). There is no separate option to lock focus through program mode (infinity lock) and if camera is unable to AF it will refuse to take a picture under any conditions, however if there is a strong detail present or some light sources within a frame this is usually enough to get AF back on track. As long as "night photography" is not your primary area of interest this camera proves to be a reliable "carry it always" compact. One thing I also find a plus is a very easy connection - camera plugs through USB port as a mass storage device (hard drive) and can be accessed (file download) without any special trouble.

There is a detailed review by Imaging-Resource ( http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XG/XGA.HTM ) available on-line, and I recommend reading it to everybody interested in this particular camera.

None so far, even if I have dropped this camera a few times (!). Vignetting can be bothersome especially with blue skies etc.
