I know that Irfanview will do lossless rotation on single images, but I think its batch rotation is not lossless. Also, I believe FinePixViewer batch rotation is not lossless.

So does anyone know how to do batch lossless JPEG rotation, (preferably with a free tool)?

Hi,

Try IrfanView T(humbnail) command, select pictures to rotate, then activate menu File - JPG lossless transform.... and wait till the process is done.

It helps to check the basic possibilities (i.e. menu entries) of a tool you are using....

How right you are. It's a shame that the help file doesn't include that technique. I will explore further!

Thanks. I am suitably admonished!

Select the images you want, right click and select rotate.

For the novices out here, what is "lossless rotation"?

Thanks in advance.

JPG's use what is called a lossey compression algorythm. Translated, that means every time you save it to disk it loses some quality. The lossless rotation is a method of rotating the jpg image without loss of quality.

Thanks in advance.

Actually, I just received a reply from Fuji claiming that FPV rotation is lossless. I did some testing yesterday that led me to conclude that it was NOT lossless e.g. the file sizes were smaller.

Can anyone verify this?

To expand just a little on Pazooter's quite accurate explanation, when a "lossless rotation" (or "lossless mirror") is done, the image data is not re-coded, thus avoiding the accumulation of compression impairments. All that is done is that an indicator in the JPEG header, telling about the orientation of the image, are changed. In effect, the header says, "Hey viewer software, YOU rotate the image you recionstruct from this data when you show/print it."

Incidentally, as I have discussed elsewhere, "lossless" is an unfortnate term, but it is consistent with the equally unfortnate "lossy compression", a term that never would have come into existence except that somebody thought "lossless" was a good name for the opposite genre of compression. The reality is that, for compression schemes such as JPEG, the decompression process at the receving end does not reconstruct exactly the orignal image data - just a set of data that describes an image that, hopefully, looks "almost exactly like" the original image to a human viewer. The term "lossy" implies that this difference is a "loss" of information. In fact, it is just a error to it. (If somebody writes my street address down wrong, he hasn't lost any information - just screwed it up!)

But of course I didn't get to name it!

To morris -- thanks for the answer.

For checking if FPV really did do it losslessly you can get a freeware tool at
http://www.mediachance.com/digicam/jpgq.htm

which will evaluate the image for quality. Just test the image before and after FPV rotation.

mark,

I realized just after I posted that question it probably sounded dumb. (OH, NO, the Kiwi taste police will get me!).

I meant,

"I assume that "XP" refers to "Windows XP", but what functionality of it provides for modifying JPEG images". I have no experience with Windows XP.

You really should have something done about that nose!
