Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D (Dynax 5D) review

update 06-02-2006

like i sayd i would i made a couple 100 shots this weekeinde.

the verdict :

oke this camera is better then the 1st 1 i got...

like i said it makes "normal" mistakes now....

but to my liking the red is stil to sensitive...
this camera deff has a problem withe the red pixel becouse they are not as fade as the other coulers...

like i said red mixes are now oke and treu to couler...

this camera is far to sensitive to daylight.
and although it gets it right some of the time it is not infaluabel.... the ratio is about 50%....

you realy have to be careful where you point it and where your lightsource is.....

putting your back to the sun and withe a bright bleu skie it can stil produce extreemly underexpozed pix that look like eavening conditions..... but it varies 50 % depens on your zoom etc....

inside you don't have this problem part from photograping from inside to outside....

i spoke to soon this camera also has the lcd screen glitsh.... in the sence that it takes a shot then does not show you de pix.... thistime it also presents itself in a differant mode then before.... so i'm guesssing it's software related , but a big bug non the les....

this is the 2onde camera now so i'm also guessing this mistake is in eavery camera seeng this 1 came directly from the minolta lab.....

tis is also a bad thing....
if i put my camera on outo rotate in my camera the pix are the correct way round....
when i open them withe minolta software , the same...

now when i open the same pix in my windows brouwser in xp they are all the wrong way round again and i have to tilt my head !!! GRRRRRRRR this i realy hate.....

this means i stil have to rotate eavery pix and i lose al the information stored in the pix if i do so :-S GRRRR this makes me realy mad becouse it's very timeconsuming and whel this is not whey i bought a 1200 euro camera !!!

for the rest it shoots whel , it's nice....
and yes don't beu one unles you only use it as a manuel becouse i found that's the only way you get wat you want , otherwise it's not wat minolta advertized !!

update 03-02-2006

i've got a new camera from minolta today in the post.
my old 1 was indeed foulty and they cept it.

i've now shot +- 50 pix indores and wil tormorow go outside to shoot al day...

this is what i've noticed so far..

oke this is a totaly differant camera , whel literaly , but it behaves totaly differant !!

oke this camera makes now the same shots as my formentioned hp 912

i stil finde RED to be over sensitive , not as much as before but it stil is brighter than the other coulers in the picture...

must admit it's not so obviouse now and is deff more exaptable , although not what i want....

do admit that coulers containing red to make them now are shown in there treu coulers.... or it's hard to spot even for me that they are not 100% treu to life.

lichting has becoume totaly differant !!
correct shades and even sepia effects wherefore i normaly got a corrected white...

to be honest it was a foult i liked in dark shots , but i'm now hoping it wil make outside shots better.

the sound level has dropt down to 50%
yes you have herd it the mirror makes 50% les noise now !! astonishing !!

the sad thing is now the lichting is correct i lost my fast 3200 iso

the iso is half the speed it was before , the good thing is it's 50% les fuzzy !!

stil think for indore use the antyshake is a must and no option.... this camera neads it , without it it's out of it's clas compared to faster compact digital camera's.
film stil is faster !!!

the screen has no problem anymore !!

sound reduction works !!

although on the whole it now seems SLOW !!!
like an old man taking it's time to focus and unlock the manual focus ring.... this used to go faster , and oke yes it did make more foults , although i liked it beeing faster...

this could be me but it seems lighter 2....

this camera is now in a state that i would say it's like a farely normal digtial camera al be it withe a honker of a 18-200 lens on the front....

to be honest nothing special i'm not amazed withe exitemant and stil slightly let down.... i expected more for a camera this price....

and yes it wil get me into more places as my old one but i do'nt feel my 1200 euro's... feels more like 800 euro's

must admit it's now in a stage that i can work withe it...
in that i can experimant and do the shots i wanted to do..
yes i think i can trust it now and get to know it and me and what i want to do....

if i would recomend it... mmmmm no do'nt think so...
it's not the egg of columbus it's prized to be....
and you stil do'nt see what you get , a poleroyd camera can do better coulerwize even a film camera...

that's it so far... see what tomorow brings....

i've bought this camera jan 2006.

i have the 18-200 DT lens from minolta on it.

i was hoping to upgrade from my hp 912 to something that came more close to my minolta vectis aps film camera , but until now it has been nothing but disapointmant....

do'nt get me wrong the camera is oke....

it's a bit bulky and heavy , but the waight is nicely spread in the middel of the lens , so most of the waight lands in your hand that suports the lens wich is easy if you rotate a lot like me.

i find the waight distrobution better than the canon 350d

the 18-200 DT lens.... wel as i expected it's wonderful...
i get the zoom i want , and it looks realy clear...
gets me in al the spots i want....

love the wide view angual....

handeling is oke , although this camera is a compromise...
to be honest my hp 912 had a better layout and was more user friendly , ea menu's are more coulerful buttons are les cheap etc...

to be honest i'f your into camera's it explains itself...

find de antyshake option not a value adder !!
to be honest if you switch it of it's hard to take good pix..

if this camera had no antyshake taking pix would be harder.

therefore i feel it is more a nesesety then an option becouse you wil leave it on 99% of the time...

stil ca'nt get it out of my minde that minolta came up withe this option to make a "bad" camera "oke"....

picture qualety.... whel i gues it's oke... the 6 megapixels are good.... you do'nt need much more....

the problem is that even if you take best jepeg shot's you wil stil have to make them smaler to show them to your friends on the net....

i also love the 3200 iso setting...
i have used it alot and for indore use withe animals it's heaven... this could just be my new 200 iso....

now we get to the bad part... and i mean realy bad !!

this camera takes shitty pix...
whel the pix are oke , but as of now i can't trust it...

my hp 912 takes better shots then this camera , and is also more consequent !!

withe better i mean better balanced pix...

i feel the minolta is just al over the place....
it's incapable of getting a pix 100% correct....!!

ther wil either be a couler variation in the reds , or a lighting error ....

you may finde that the bottem half of your pix is perfect but it made a mistake in the top part....

what seems ofwhite in the viewfinder wil be corrected to plaine white !!

trafic signs wil seem to eluminate al by themselves....

even withe your back to the sun this camera is capable of making a daylight situation look like 6 in the eavening...

things that my hp 912 got correct in 1 go this camera seems to stupide to understand....

i sometimes feel that there is totaly no daylight correction....

to be honest it's driving me crazie....!!!
the worst part is convincing others becouse trust me they wil tel you your a bad photographer... while it's clearly the camera when i start comparing....

things i could do withe my aps vectis film are now imposible...

for an slr where you see what you get it's realy bad...
you deff DO NOT see what you get... and at al it's hard to get close to it...

this is what i was afrade of , and whel i got it bigtime....

that's whey i's of to the minolta lab and i just hope they finde a foult and it becoumes grait...

so far this has been the worst buy of 2006...

i'm very letdown by minolta becouse i have a camera i ca'nt trust......

again i hope they can fix it and if it's better i wil tel you al by writing a new review....

in this state it's to expensive for what it is....

until then buy it at your own risk....

Problems:

see comments above !!

just do'nt buy it.... trust me you wil regret it....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

03-02-2006

most problems are fixed now consering the digital innerds of the camera...

red is stil to bright although very slightly , stil not what you see is what you get as minolta says in it's advertizing !!

if i would design a camera i would make a better 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- couler variations
ea especialy notable in the reds , red is either brigther / fader then in real life..

- white balance variations
ea you wil get under / over expozed pix when you normaly do'nt.... and get strange and to bright / to dark shadow's

- no balanced pix

- mailfunction in the lcd 3 sec timer , in some settings it
fails and does not show any pix.

- no pix count....

- cheap butons , espacialy the kros buttons...

- you sometimes push the af button withe your nose when close to the viewfinder...

- your hands wil smel of the grip when holding it for a long time !!

- the 18-200 DT lens when walking wil extend on it's own so if you have it at 18 wen you start walking it wil slowy extend itself to 200 in a space of 5 to 10 min walking...

- no place for my lenscap !!!

- bad software

- does not emulate a 35 mm film slr , is much to sensitive for my liking if this camera is now operating correct...
