Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170 review

I got this camera for my family's trip to Maui as we needed something smaller
than my Nikon D-SLR to carry around on the beach. Out of the box, it feels
like a well-built unit which is typical of Sony products. This is my first Sony
Cyber-shot and was very excited to use it. Unfortunately, that's where the
praise ends. I forgot my card reader at home so I was not able to look at the
pictures until after we came back. On the built-in LCD, everything looked
great but when I downloaded the pictures to my PC, almost all of the beach
and outdoor shots I took has glare or haze appearing anywhere from the
corners to the top and bottom. I am sure it was not smudge on the lens as I
check it often for fingerprints and dust. This is the 4th compact digital camera
I have owned and none of the 1st three exhibited this condition even on high
noon when the sun is at its highest or during sunset. Also, the Noise
Reduction kicks in even on amply lit subjects making the picture odd-looking.
I am very disappointed indeed and I returned the camera to the store as soon
as I got the chance. I am not sure if the one I got was defective but I am
hesitant to try another Sony for now.

- glare/haze on outdoor shots
- NR removes a lot of fine detail even on amply lit environment
- overexposure is more the rule than the exception
- goes to high ISO very easy which is why the NR kicks in (i think)
