FF Workhorse (and a fast one, too)

There is nothing not to like about the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM if you need a lens that gets the job done. Photojournalists, wedding photographers, event shooters, everybody who works in a fast paced environment will appreciate the qualities of this lens.

It is sharp at f/2.8 and even better at f/4. AF is as good as it gets. The zoom and focus rings are big, well placed, smooth and precise. The zoom range allows to shoot almost everything (only on full frame cameras like the 5D). The f/2.8 aperture combined with the low noise of a FF camera allows low light and very low light photography. At f/2.8 it is possible to separate the subject nicely from a blurred background. The quality of the bokeh is pleasant, better that most zoom lenses and many fast primes. Its build quality is the best you can get (from Canon), a lot of metal and very well put together.

But, it has no IS, isn't that a problem? I don't miss it. The lens is huge and heavy. Held right, it stabilizes itself. One other thing - it may not be white, but due to its size it may not be the best lens for street photography unless you want everybody to notice what you are up to.

At 24mm this lens has a lot of field curvature. This is not a dedicated wide angle landscape lens.
