I would buy this but...if only camera makers would listen.

This looks like a big improvement on the G12. My son has the G12 and I have the Canon S90. I am in the market for another compact and the hopefuls were G15, the S110 or the Sony RX100. Unfortunately there is just not enough that grabs me.

What I like about the G15 is the lens performance. F1.8 - 2.8. This is what attracts me to this camera over the Sony F1.8-F4.9. The high f-number on the telephoto end of the sony turns me off.

If the G15 was 24-140, not 28-140 (or 24-120 like the S110) with F1.8 - 2.8 range and it had a functional aperture ring like the S110 (not that ridiculous ring adapter), I would go out and buy the G15 today (I would buy it over the Sony RX100). Why do camera makers insist on starting at 28mm instead of 24mm these days?

I like the S110 because of its compactness, but the f-number range is too high at the telephoto end.

Unfortunately camera makers have not innovated enough. I recently went on 5 weeks leave and 98% of the time I used my iPhone 5. Excellent photos! I took my Canon S90 and took a few photos. The iPhone does have its limitations. It is fine if you don't want to take telephoto shots and not as nice as having full control.

So camera makers are really going to have to make a big leap forward to make me want to really hand over the money.

I have an old Canon EOS 30 film camera which is now mothballed. I was considering the 5D III as a replacement, but the bulk of it all! I like the SLR and the constant f-numenr lenses. One of first tests for travel now is "how much does it weigh?

The closest thing that got me excited recently was the Sony RX1. It is full frame (which really what I am after) and in a compact device. But the disappointment was the fixed 35mm lens. What use is that. It is not even an interchangeable lens. The RX1 would be perfect if it had a 24-120 (f2 lens constant across the range of even f1.4-2.8 would be acceptable). I would actually hand the money over for that.

The Olympus OM-D looks promising and may be worth considering if they had some decent lenses, e.g. constant f-number across the range, not f3.5-6.3. Thats just no good.

Maybe I will just wait and see what this year brings.
