The sensor issue only arises at high ISO. In normal light the E-P3 is fine.

A good high ISO performance is not only needed for shooting in dim light.  Even in normal light, good high ISO performance can be very useful to provide high shutter speeds to freeze running children or sportsmen in action, stop leaves in breezes.

Besides high ISO, the E-P3's sensor is also weak in DR performance. DXOmark scores:

E-P3 DR - 10.1

E-PL4 DR - 12.3

Those 2 extra stops will mean a lot less blown highlights or details lost in shadows for outdoor on bright days, or a lot less darkroom work.

It should be clear that the jump in sensor performance in the latest E-M5, E-PM2, and E-PL5 is too high to ignore, if the primary purpose for getting the camera is to make good pictures.

The E-PM1, E-PL3, and E-P3 are still able to take fine pictures but the standard has been raised much higher now in the latest models.
