Re: My Replacement for the excellent S90
Yes Adam, agreed. Your small gallery of RX100 samples clearly shows the capabilities of the RX100. Very nice image quality with rich color. The images form the RX100 appear to have a bit of edge over those form the G1X. Thoughts?
There are certainly some of features of the G15 I really like but the IQ as you say certainly will not be better than the RX100. Operationally, the G15 does not feel quite as fast as the RX100, though it is noticeably faster than the S90....as is the S110. At the shop I stopped at right this week, the RX100 is their top-selling non-DSLR camera at the moment so it is clear it is being well received.
Focus acquisition and writing the image to the memory card are clearly faster in the RX100 than the others. The programmable control ring and the ability to have smooth manual focus (instead of click-type) or manual zoom is amazing for a camera in this class. One advantage of the slightly slow zoom I guess is on the S90 it is sort of "jerky" and often hard to get it just where you want it. So I suppose the RX100 would give more more accurate control over your zoom.
Certainly compared to a NEX, the RX100 is going to provide a much a nicer experience overall. It just "feels" like a top-quality, high-end product as you hold it. I can understand why you sold your NEX. I have tried the NEX (in store only) and was never too keen on the lenses or the UI. The NEX also seemed rather poorly balanced with the longer lenses. The RX100 is very nice in those regards. The little bit of "heft" to the RX100 is a plus here and the only slightly larger size and weight as compared to the S90 will likely make it a bit easier for most to handle.
I hope I did not sound to harsh on my comparisons as that was not the intent. I was, unrealistically so perhaps, hoping for closer to DSLR speeds out of the RX100 and was obviously a bit disappointed with the speed, especially for the zoom. The reality is, it is NOT a DLSR so it won't be as fast as my DSLR...no matter how much I wish it would be!!!
So overall, as compared to the S90 does it "feel" noticeably faster in everyday use? I am sure you have as I have missed an occasional shot due to the speed (or lack thereof) of the S90. Have you used any digital zoom on it? I would think with 20mp one could do so safely to an extent and still end up with plenty of pixels. Are they any features or controls of the S90 you miss on the RX100?
At the end of the day, the RX100 seems a little expensive but it does have a beautiful lens and sensor. On the other hand, it is not much more than a typical lens. And you are likely right. I would probably tend to use the RX100 more than the S90 and the DSLR a bit less. As much as I enjoy the DSLR, like everyone there are the times I just want the size, weight and convenience of the pocket cam.
