The answer to if you need to change your settings for a black background is most likely yes.  Right now, you exposure is set for a mostly white image with just a little dark stuff.  Many things do not lend themselves to a black background, I only shoot very bright colored things, or glassware or shiny things on a black background.  On the white background, you would use about +1 to +2 EV of what the camera calculated, and on a black background, you would use -1 to -2 EV of what the camera calculated.
