Is the 50 1.4 supposed to be this bad?

I just got a 50 1.4 along with my new 6D, and the results are...all over the place, but mostly soft and out of focus. I have always heard this lens was "dreamlike" when wide open, but it is supposed to be this soft at 1.4? I am no stranger to primes, having shot with a Sigma 30 1.4 for nearly 5 years now, so I don't think "user error" nor slow shutter speeds are the culprit here. f/2 and 2.8 also have mixed results as well, though are noticeably better.

On occassion, I am able to coax a good, sharp picture out of the lens at 1.4, but mostly, they are to my eyes - unacceptable. Do I have a dud?

Here are some full size and 100% crops. Focus always on the nearest eye/face.

First, 2 very acceptable shots (the minority):

1/125s full size

1/125s 100%

1/50s full size

1/50s 100% crop

Now for some obviously bad shots (the majority):

1/320s full size

1/320s 100% crop

1/50s full size

1/800s full size

1/800s 100% crop

1/640s full size

1/640s 100% crop

What do you think?
