How can I fix main mirror in 500D T1i ?

Hi everyone,

The following problem:

My 500D has taken quite a few pictures doing tons of timelapses (I guess shutter count should be around 70,000-100,000 by now). Recently a problem occured:

First I got weird noises when I switch on the live view, then I got the occasional error 80 (I think it was 80 but it only occurred twice or so). And now my mirror blocks part of the view in the viewfinder (top), Autofocus won't work properly, and metering doesn't work either (everything's overexposed). So I looked at the mirror and it seems to work fine, and the second mirror or bottom mirror or however it's called (the one for the autofocus if i got that right) goes up as well. But I think the problem is that the main mirror (or both, they're one unit) does not go all the way down. So if the mirror is down, i can still push it down another 2-3 mm.

The questions:

- Has anybody ever have had the same problem and how did you solve it?

- Is the problem the spring that pushes down the mirror?

- Should I take the spring out and try to retighten it, or will I never be able to get the spring back in?

Any help or suggestion is much appreciated,

Many Thanks,

Felix
