Ironically, I received my Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II from Amazon just on the day DPreview comes out with its review. I'm a pro and wanted to fill that yawning gap between my 16-35 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8. I just motored off a few test frames and will use it on a biz portrait tomorrow morning, but here are a few initial impressions:

1. Dang, that sucker is expensive! I coughed up about $2200 with tax.

2. The DPreview review is spot on. You see significant vignetting at f/2.8, but it settles down at f/4 and is pretty even by f/5.6. A bit of barrel distortion, no biggie.

3. Center sharpness and contrast appears very good even at f/2.8, but not quite at the level of a quality fixed focal length lens. Good color.

4. Somewhat heavy, but anyone who handles a 70-200 f/2.8 will hardly notice. One thing that I shouldn't have been surprised about (but was) is that the front section moves 1-1/2 inches forward when you zoom from 24mm to 70mm. (I was unconsciously expecting the usual internal mechanism like the 16-35 and 70-200.)

5. As everyone says, too bad it doesn't have IS.

Conclusion: this is a real workhorse of a lens that will probably remain affixed to one of my full frame bodies most of the time. Horrendously expensive, Canon is charging all that the market will bear. But since I will probably use it for the next 10-15 years in a professional capacity, I'm not complaining--too much.

Why not go with the Sigma or Tamron variant? Both have Stabilization and cost $1,000 less.
