Why GPS?
1

Yes, it would just add GPS coordinates to the EXIF

Why is this useful?

Say you are doing a survey of local flora.  You have to add GPS data for each photo to locate it on a map.  Sure you could manually add the info for each of the 500 shots you took that day, but are you really going to remember exactly where that particular Sisyrinchium angustifolium or Arisaema triphyllum was?  Ideally, you will take meticulous notes, record frame number and coordinates along w species and habitat for each plant, but that still means manually editing each photo to add to the EXIF.  So what's wrong w being able to hook up an external GPS and have the data recorded automatically?   I don't think an internal GPS would be needed, however...why force everyone to pay for the hardware only a few need. Then again, those few might be people who would buy Olympus over Nikon if this feature was present?

But the user base is probably too small to make any provision for that subset who wants GPS.  Unless development cost is spread across the OM-D pro as well.

Oh, and of course a more mundane, but probably more common use would be pinning photos to Google Earth... but I expect most of those would be smartphone generated.
