Thanks for all the comments.  I do realize there are many ways to skin the HDR cat.  My only point was that I am amazed that a single RAW image can be readily made to equal or exceed the result of an in-camera 6EV multiple frame jpg in most instances.

That has me pretty cold on using multi-frame HDR on the A99 for most situations.

I read over at dyxum that a good way to deal with the EVF is to enable aggressive DRO mode and then shoot RAW--the EVF will display the DRO effect when effect is turned on.  This tends to bring up the shadows in the EVF for viewing.  I haven't tried this but it sounds like a good idea.
