I agree with D Cox, in Mead the 'ea' is similar to 'ee' in 'need.' The 'ea' in 'meat' is shorter and sharper...at least in US English.

I saw an article about Carver Mead recently

He seems to still be doing well and (from what he's said previously) pursuing his research even after his retirement from teaching.
