My first tripod was from Manfrotto - a venerable 055 (aluminium) and a ball head in the past millenium! I paid USD 150 for the combo and it presented good service for years - actually I used it as part of my trade-in when I bought one of my DSLR (then I had a better Gitzo tripod).

I think the current "equivalent" is at USD 186.52 at B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/480322-REG/Manfrotto_190XPROB_Pro_Aluminum_Tripod.html

I am sure this tripod will not deception you as your first tripod.

One more note: avoid that kind of "pistol" grips: actually they are small ball heads - very small to be stable under more hard conditions. Go to a "real" ball head for stability.
