Is Nikon worth it?

I have for years planned to upgrade my D80. I wished for a D400, but I think the D400 is never going to be produced.

What I was hoping for was:
  • Pro house
  • Very good ISO
  • About 6+ fps.
  • Fast and accurate AF.
I looked at the D600 it would fit my needs (except for the small af area) but I do not dare to buy one because of the dust issue. I do not want to wet-clean my sensor repeatedly. (On My D80, a rocket blower is all I need)

Then I looked at the D800, but here we have the “left focus issue” Is there other problems with this camera.

How is ISO in real-life compared to D80/200/300?

The D800 has a pro house and a pro price, but does it also have a pro quality?

Alternative I could wait some years for a new camera to occur, but if Nikons standard is the same these cameras will also have some issues.

If Thom Hogan's estimate is correct on the left AF issue, you had a 70% to 80% chance of getting a camera without the problem. That was before the problem was fixed. There have been indications that new cameras do not have the problem.

I bought my D800E in the middle of the problem period. It does not have the left AF problem.

Yes, Nikon is " worth it " at least for me, I prefer the ergonomics over other brands. I recently replaced my D700 (still a great DSLR) with a D800 with no issues; I tried a D600 but just did like the feel but everyone is different. Most likely you would see a noticeable improvement with any of these three cameras.

Image quality aside, D800 built quality is inferior to my d300 (!), and d600 is plain tragic in this regard.

Cheers

d7100. Why are you not considering the d7100? It has yoru 6 fps, very good ISO, the d700 autofocus, good build.

I think in the days before the internet the vast majority of people would never even have found the left focus issue, and if they did they would have simply focused using the center point, which is always the best anyway, and recomposed. So while it makes for something to complain about, I just don't see it as being that big of an issue, certainly not something that would affect a buying decision.
3D tracking is crippled if the left side is not focusing accurately. I would not consider this acceptable since part of why I want the D800 is for its presumably state-of-the-art AF system (YMMV).

you are right, I have also been thinking of that. But the har a bit hard to find and also quite expensive.
If you're willing to pay $1600-1700, I don't think they are hard to find. You think it is a high asking price? I think it is well worth it. I wouldn't part with mine even for $1000 more than that. Short of D3s there isn't anything there that is better for my needs, and I would never trade my D700 for a D800, -- but many others certainly would.

I'm not given Nikon the benefit of anything. They've jumped the shark. While I have no plans to switch off of Nikon - too heavily invested in lenses and I've got all my kit working well - I don't recommend the company to anyone.

There are simply too many other excellent choices out there to deal with Nikon's customer unfriendly stance. It's not worth it. Nikon's not that special.

In what way? I saw no build quality degradation between the D700 and the D800E.
Compare memory card door (but d300, not d700). How do you find "pro" stock strap?
That is a small item to classify a whole camera. Personally, I've never had a problem with the card door on the D700 or the D800E. Never used a D300. The D700 and D800E have magnesium frames, good weather sealing, and feel quite well built to me.

I never unwrap the strap that comes with Nikon cameras. If they want that kind of advertising, they can pay me to wear it. I use an OP/TECH USA 1506372 with Swivel Hook Connectors and Connector Adapt-Its.

Ignore what you read on these forums, unless Nikon confirms it (the D600 dust problem).

I am entirely satisfied with the performnace and quality of the D800. Image quality is significantly better than my D300, which I have kept as a backup. I gave away my D200. I still liked the image quality but the noise at high ISO and limited dynamic range even shooting RAW were really a handicap (D80 is the same)

I handled a D7000 and a D600 last week. I was alarmed to realise that many things I've grown used to on the Pro bodies aren't there on the Expert bodies. Exit any thought of buying a D7100 or D600.

You're moving up from a D80, however. If I were you I would check out the D7100 first. Same user interface as what you're running but a much-improved body. Amost everything you could wish for in a D400...

OK, let`s call it: not up to my expectation.

BTW: 1 minute is plenty enough to rate build quality. I was torn between d600 and d800, and just this minute was like an enlightment. Did You compared side by side d600 vs d800???

Cheers
No, I have not compared to the D800 since I didn't intend to purchase one. I would expect the D800 to be better, but I have not tried it. But I've owned both the D300s and D700 previously and fine the D600 build fine, and I was surprised to find it much more solid that the D7000 since everyone says it's just a full frame D7000.

Like I said, I think it's fine for someone to say they don't like the D600 (for whatever reason). But it's like it has terrible build quality because it doesn't.
