I've got a 2TB WD My Passport which I run from a USB3 port and it works great. Plus the drive is really small - shirt pocketable - so it's easy to take as a backup when travelling. I regularly put all my system backups and photo/videos on it.

For mobility reasons I switched to using laptops several years ago.  I have been using USB portable hds for backup.  For several years they were USB 2.0, but the more recent ones are USB 3.0.  I bought a new laptop a couple of months ago that has USB 3.0 ports.  I plug them in when I need to use them and then unplug them when I don't so that they are not turned on all the time.

I was just wondering, do you leave yours plugged in all the time?
