That's pretty much my experience though I'm not sure it's really fair to compare to primes. I have the PL25, and Oly 45 and 60. All are noticeably sharper if examining critically. But, primes should be sharper and each of those primes costs nearly as much (talking retail off the shelf) as the 12-50. In terms of IQ I think the relevant comparison is to standard kit lenses. Then I think it looks better. I'd say it's a solid kit zoom lens with some nice features and some limitations. It covers a very versatile focal length range, it's weather sealed, it has a pretty useful close focusing mode, and it works well for video. Indeed, it's probably optimized for video. Primary limitations are the slow aperture (basically true of the 14-42 though that's a tad faster at common focal lengths) and kit quality IQ.
