is D700 AF slower than modern cameras?

I briefly handled a friend's D700 with 24-70 f/2.8 AF-S. The AF seemed very slow compared to my other cameras (current E-PM2, sold D7000, returned D600). I've been thinking about getting a D700 to wait until the D600 dust issues settle down. I have never heard complaints about the D700 AF. When asked, my friend said most D700 users prefer manual focus anyway, so it's a non-issue. Is this going to be a problem for me? I lack the sportsmanlike hand-eye coordination which is required for full-time manual focusing.

Thanks
