The shots you took of the isolated starfish are fine becuase you didn't have to put any thought into how to arrage other elements in the scene into a coherent theme.

But, add another element or two and your photo's fall appart.

I know this sounds critical but this is not a good venue to write a book about composition.

Those have already been done and I suggest you read one.

Again, take a look at Kodak's How to Take Petter Pictures.

It is old but it should be available in a Library.
