Total amateur here... I've been learning my way around NEX7 and Zeiss24 for a few weeks. Love the stills but can't quite get the videos to come out smooth. With upcoming overseas trip I am worried I won't get the videos to come out to my expectations so I am considering SEL-35F18 for it's OSS as my main lens for this trip so I don't have to keep switching lenses on the go, suggestions?

Hi,

For travel I use the Tamron 18 200 so I don't switch lenses. Then, the 16 mm + ultrawide adapter. I would only use the 35mm for "main night photography". I forgot my zoom in a recent trip and I really missed the versatility. In good city light the zoom also works fine.

Regards,
Damian.

Can u live with a fixed 50mm equivalent ? That's the only relevant question. If you can, then the SEL 35 is an excellent choice. For comparison it's the ONLY native E lens that I've tried, and kept, ditched all my other attempts due either to less then stellar optical quality (both kit zooms) or slow poke AF (SEL 50). The 35/1.8 solves both issues and is now virtually glued to my nex7 (well, when the manual focus PEN 38 comes off, that is).

For video you'd want an OSS lens.

The E35 is a very versatile and good choice, but the FOV can be limiting.

With the E35, I suggest to also take either the 1650 or the E20 pancake. Together, they are smaller than the E24.

If you do a lot of video, choose the 1650. You'd take your E24 with the 1650 this way.

If size does not matter, the original 18200 with your E24, for lowlight and certain stills, also makes for a great combination.

I would not take just fixed lens. Probably E35 and 16-50 and if size is not big issues than E35 and 18-200.

SEL35 is great for video. You'll love it.

I believe there will be times that you want to capture breathtaking landscape scenery when you are traveling. SEL35 may or may not fulfill your need for landscape.
You could always use panorama mode if you don't mind to shoot JPEG or shoot RAW and stitch the images when you get home.
And, of course you could bring the SEL16 with you, for the landscape needs.

Have fun and all the best!

I'd bring a 35/1.8 and a Sigma 19. I did a trip to Italy with nothing but the Sigma 19 and 30mm lenses (well, and an X100 too, which matches the 24/1.8 in terms of FL) and was perfectly happy with the results. I'm not much of a tele shooter, though.

Thanks everyone for your input, you're confirming what I was suspecting, which is the need for a wide angle to pair the 35(50 equivalent) with. I hate buying things twice which is why the only uwd glass I'm considering is the new 10-18 everyone seems to like, but the darn thing would cost another $1K by the time I'm done adding a couple filters to it.

If anyone could provide link(s) to some sample videos they've shot with the SEL-3518 that would be very helpful.
