I have been backpacking for three months so far with the 800 + 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, a gitzo traveler tripod, and a plethora of other gear. But I am doing this for a living. If you are traveling on a family vacation, take a mirrorless and 2 lenses and be done with it. No need for a D800 or D4.....

I don't disagree with you, but the question posed by the OP didn't ask for general camera suggestions. He asked for choices between the 2 bodies, D4 or D800.

As for me if I'm going on vacation that doesn't include opportunities for serious work, my choice is even lighter than you suggest; I just take my Canon G11. Done. As I find I don't take many pics if I'm not out stalking landscapes, the P & S is usually more than I need. And then there is always the (horrors!!) smartphone for pure, spur of the moment captures.
