It's the SP version I bought, no clue about whether it's adaptall or AF, but I assume it's AF. Not sure tough if I'm a proficient enough lens mechanic to do the operations you mentioned...

I messed around with a broken 28-135 a few years ago, trying to fix it, and, well, it became a spare parts supplier

We'll see, maybe - depending on the shape in which it comes - I'll give it to a pro lens mechanic.

And thanks for the hints... I'll just mount it and start shooting. What in the end triggered of my decision to buy one was (apart the instant availability) the smooth bokeh the lens seems to have. I had the 135mm STF some years ago, found it to heavy and too manual and too costly, so sold it. Shouldn't have - the bokeh was unbeatable (but, well that is what the lens was BUILT for...).
