Using Variable ND's

I love them for the very reason you mentioned, composition. Its almost impossble the focus and compose an image in a 10 stop reduction shot. There's always a little "I think I got it".  The Vari NDs on the market seem to be pretty good with color and also allow you dial out a little effect so you can compose and focus. The only thing I would have liked to have on the Vari ND I got is a thread filter end for additional attachments, but as it is its fine. BTW I use a Genus 2-8 stop.  Also, one last thing to  know when you start your search, make sure youget one that has more stops than you need. I say this because the Vari NDs tend to artifact a little when they are at the maximum effect.
