It's a photographer problem (exposure), not the lens (nt)

I've been having a slight issue with the Rokinon 8mm f/3.5.

I was taking pictures outside on a sunny day and I couldn't manage to get any of them looking decent.
Either the sky was overexposed and just looked white instead of blue, or everything else was just too dark in order for the sky to look normal.

Last settings I tried were something like ISO 200 or 400, F/8, 1/400 or 1/800 depending on the ISO I had used.

With my 18-55 EF-S however, there was a noticeable improvement and I was able to capture decent shots.

Why is this?

For those that don't know the Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 is a manual lens. I'm using a Canon 550d, so perhaps there's some sort of setting that I don't know about that messes with the exposure and contrast?
