Its de Glass

I agree with you that the difference is not as dramatic as 17 lb. but it is significant.

Nikon D5100 = 510 g

Nikon 24-70 mm F2.8 = 900 g

TOTAL = 1410 g

Panasonic Lumix GH3 = 550 g

Panasonic 12-35 mm F2.8 = 305 g

TOTAL = 855 g

Olympus OM-D = 430 g

´╗┐Panasonic 12-35 mm F2.8 = 305 g

TOTAL = 735g

Now the Nikon is not a weather resistant case so if we look at a weather resistant model like the Canon EOS 7D you see:

Canon EOS 7D = 816 g

Canon 24-70 mm F2.8 = 803 g

TOTAL = 1619 g

So the real weight savings (surprise, surprise) is in de glass where the Olympus and the Panasonic with comparably equipped lens with 52% and 61% of the Nikon setup and 45% and 52% of the weather resistant Canon set up.

The bodies are also much lighter to a weather resistant DSLR.  The Olympus and Panasonic are 53% and 67% of the weight of the Canon EOS 7D.

So I think that it is fair to say that a comparable micro4/3 setup weighs 50-60% of a non-weather resistant DSLR and 40-50% the weight of a weather resistant DSLR. All this being said, there may be benefits in terms of image quality with these bigger brothers, but in terms of weight; these are the numbers.

My $.02
