Re: Panasonic GX1 + 14mm or compact?

I use the GX1 and 14mm, 20mm and 45mm prime kit as a backup / replacement for my Canon 5D Mark III kit when I want to go light.

I use it for documentary photojournalism and travel photography.

It works very well. RAW files are nice, lenses are very sharp and camera is pretty fast (not as fast as Mark III or D700 but not very close to 5D Mark II).

My only complaints are: 1) Battery life, if you're used to the excellent battery life of most dSLRs now, you'll be disappointed by GX1. I can barely squeeze one 16 gig card (I shoot raw exclusively), about 800 frames, out of a battery. 2) Available darkness / low light it's no match for the D700 or any FF digital. I know some might disagree but it's just not. The only quality problems I've had have been in very dark situations. It's not just noise, there are other issues.

But as backup for adventure travel, hiking etc I would say it's an excellent choice.
