G1X - A few in appallingly low light
1

Hi,

A lot of people ask about the G1X for its low light capabilities and low noise.  I bought mine last year before a trip to Canada, and one of the first things we saw after we'd arrived was the Royal Nova Scotia Military Tattoo in Halifax, which I believe is the second biggest in the world after the one in Edinburgh. The performers are all military and police men and women.

So, having barely opened the box, I snapped away handheld indoors in the huge stadium, with mixed light sources, spotlighting and so on.  For some odd reason I left the camera at auto-ISO and had the contrast/DR adjustment set to 200.  I had OIS on, and used negative compensation to adjust for the spotlighting.  These are large jpegs SOOC.  They aren't perfect - if I'd known the camera for longer I would have had the confidence to set fixed higher ISOs and it might have frozen the subject movement a little better.  However, they're vastly better than my G12 would have produced with its smaller sensor.  They give an idea of its capabilities, and it certainly recorded the memories of the event well.

An additional pleasure was that the G1X was a lot smaller and lighter than toting my DSLR around the planet for six weeks.....

Any comments /C&C welcome.......

Cheers, Rod
