I think the vast majority of users just eat the $18 cost of a new tank. It's about the cheapest item in the entire printing 'chain'.

$18 every 3 or 4 complete nine cartridge sets, it isn't really worth considering.

I got my printer three month ago and only printed three prints and my maintenance cart if down half way already, probably from having to do power cleaning as the matte black did not print.

There is a lot dumped in there during the initialization process, but usually little after that. I have never done a power cleaning, in fact I have never had to do any manual cleanings. A black ink swap also takes a fair amount of ink.

If you are going to average one print a month, then I think your only worry would be whether Epson still stocks 3880 tanks when you come to need one.

I love the way Epson kept this printer for years! I figured it must be a good one!

I had the old four color Epson 3000, then a used Epson 9500, then a used 24" HP (a horror) Designjet.  I think this printer will be my favorite, especially as I found this great group of people so willing to share!
