Re: Buy that TC anyway...

From what I've read, no the viewfinder won't automatically reduce in size. That would require some additional lens elements in the body that can switch in and out. Or an electronic viewfinder, neither of which the D7100 has.

I have the 70-300VR as well as the 300f4. Let me tell you, the difference is enormous. Shooting wide-open on the 300f4 gives sharper photos than at f8 on my 70-300 with two more stops of light. The D7000 is still a great camera, you'll likely get far better results from the D7000+300f4 combo than a D7100+70-300 combo. I rarely even carry my 70-300 anymore when birding.

Go for the 300f4 if you have the money, by far the better choice in your situation. The 1.4tc is also great, and I'll likely still purchase one in the future when I've earned enough money after buying the D7100. But seeing as I'm a student, and doing photography as a hobby (I'm an engineering student), that'll likely take awhile...
