Like others said, with a field of view as large as this lens has it's difficult to meter the whole shot correctly. When I use this lens outdoors I almost always shoot bracketed exposures and do HDR.
Even if you don't want to do HDR, you could still shoot bracketed exposures and it would give you a few options to choose from. When I shoot for HDR I do 3 shots at -2, 0, +2, but if you are not going to use your shots for HDR maybe shoot -2/3, 0, +2/3 or something like that and keep the one you like best.

I also shoot RAW. It gives a lot more flexibility in post and that can help too.

It's a fun lens, but it does present some challenges.
