nikon D7100 - how will Canon respond?

As Bob said, the number of focus points on the box is irrelevant. How the focus system works in practice is.

As for Canon being behind... The 1DX, 5DmkIII and 6D are all great offerings that compete well with the D4, D800 and D600. As always, Canon and Nikon use different philosophies and not always cater to everyone (which is impossible). Nikon has now released a D5200 and D7100 and those will no doubt find their equivalent in a Rebel and 70D.

Could be me, but I'm not seeing what you're suggesting.
