What's wrong with my phone camera (HTC Rezound)?
It turned out to be a setting - "Auto Enhance". That is a default setting but I had read somewhere to uncheck it and I guess I had. Wrong.
It took me awhile to see the impact because it doesn't affect outdoor pics, but Auto Enhance surely is required for indoor pics. My spin on the issue is that the indoor picture quality is bad (by default - low quality camera), but Auto Enhance comes along after the picture is taken and cleans up the crappy picture.
I guess that's par for the course with phone cameras! Mine at least.
So now when I'm home and taking indoor pics, I make sure I pull out my Canon point-n-shoot instead of using the phone -- even with the cleanup setting.
