4. The 40 2.8 is in fact sharper across the frame as it is one of Canon's sharpest lenses (just ask MAC and other, it even bests the 24-70 2.8L at 40mm) and it has very pleasing bokeh characteristics.

for $150 - the 40 mm lens is hard to beat -- almost a free gift-- better mtf than the new $2200 24-70 f2.8 L II in mtf - which is impressive indeed.

I might get one at some point.

I'll likely keep all my primes in this range for now -- my 50 f1.4, my 50 f1.8, 60 f2.8 macro and my 35 f2. Right now I like and have applications for all four. Two were bought used. hmm, I guess I do have about a $1000 wrapped up in these, maybe I'll sell them when a new 50 comes out and also get the new sigma 35 f1.4

for now, the canon 35 f2 serves me well with an extra stop of ss in low light without flash. The corners are not an issue when one shoots moving kids indoors with my f2.2 T4i or 60d hi iso without flash like me. barrel is only slight, nothing to worry about.
