Why Sigma 120-300 f/2.8

For sports...

For sports I now use a 70-200 on a D700 for "wide angle" shots (field sports like lax, field hockey, soccer), and a 300mm Nikon on a D800 for isolating individual players on the field. I would love to have a 120-300 zoom that was as sharp as the Nikon pair. It would give me more flexibility when tracking a player as he/she gets closer.

As to the Sigma that a poster showed samples of, most were quite crisp, though many of the portraits were soft in the faces of the players and coaches. Not sure if it's because of AF fine tuning, or problems focusing at certain focal lengths, but that would be a deal killer if I couldn't nail the focus on the player's face:
