What is the point of Grey ink?

We have a six color printer with CMYKKg inkjet printer, where one K (black) is pigment and the other dye. For text-only, one or the other can be selected for better looking output. Don't know which is which.

The g (gray) cartridge never seems to run out. I really don't know why Canon put it in there. Whereas it would be nice to have light cyan for skies and such. Especially Panasonic cameras produce too much cyan spotting in shadow areas of prints, and light cyan might tone that down. Light magenta seems less useful.

Is gray mostly for people who print B&W?
