I placed an order for a new 5D3 but I still haven't decided on a new general walkaround lens yet. My choice has came down to two different lenses:

- The Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC

- The Canon 24-105 f4 L IS

Actually I would prefer the Canon for the longer reach but I'm a little bit worried about it's resolution characteristics. always tests dozens of different copies from the same lens so their results are probably the most representative ones out there. Here's what they found:

In short: The average MTF50 of the Tamron is 12% higher at 24mm (815 vs 730) and 8% higher at 70mm (735 vs 680). These are interesting numbers but I wonder how much difference they make in real life?

Canon 24-105 users? What do you think about the sharpness of your lens especially in the corners and wide open?

I'd appreciate any help!

I tried a few 24-105 and they were all disappointing, even my cheap tamron 28-75 2.8 was sharper and the new 24-70 VC should be better too.

I have a lot of L lenses but the 24-105 was blah every time I tried one.

I managed to take some good pictures with the 24-105.  But a lot of them were "blah", as you say.  I'm much happier with the 24-70II.  But here is a shot from the 24-105:
